A Mother’s Day Story: “Bright” Finds His Home

A Mother’s Day Story: “Bright” Finds His Home

Some paintings carry more than colour and form, they carry intention, emotion, and a story that continues long after the final brushstroke.

This Mother’s Day felt especially meaningful, as one of my gorilla paintings, “Bright”, found its new home as a surprise gift.

The Meaning Behind “Bright”

“Bright” was created to shine a light on the Cross River gorilla, one of the most endangered primates in the world, with less than 300 remaining.

From the beginning, this piece was about more than aesthetics. It was about awareness, presence, and capturing the quiet strength these animals hold. Through expressive colour and energy, I wanted to create something that would draw people in and gently encourage them to look deeper.

A Connection Beyond the Canvas

What makes this story so special is the journey of the family who welcomed Bright into their home.

They had recently visited Paignton Zoo, where they spent time observing the gorilla their movements, their interactions, and their quiet intelligence.

That real-life connection stayed with them.

So when they later came across Bright, something resonated. It wasn’t just a painting, it reflected a moment they had experienced together.

When they discovered that 50% of the proceeds from this piece would be donated to the conservation charity supporting Paignton Zoo, the connection became even more meaningful.

This piece was always intended to have an impact beyond the canvas.

I’m incredibly proud to share that 50% of the sale proceeds from “Bright” have now been donated to support conservation efforts connected to Paignton Zoo. Being able to give back in this way, through something I’ve created feels deeply aligned with my purpose as an artist.

It’s a small step, but one that contributes to the protection and future of these incredible animals.

A Gift for Mother’s Day

To know that Bright was chosen as a Mother’s Day gift adds such a beautiful layer to the story.

Motherhood is rooted in care, protection, and connection, qualities we see mirrored so powerfully in the animal world. Gorillas, in particular, are known for their strong family bonds and nurturing nature.

Seeing the family with the painting, you can truly feel it, Bright has been welcomed with the same love and light he was created to represent.

Why I Paint

Moments like this remind me why I do what I do.

Art has the ability to connect people, not just to each other, but to the natural world. To spark emotion, awareness, and conversation.

Through my work, I hope to continue celebrating wildlife while encouraging us all to care more deeply for the world we share.

Looking Ahead

This is just the beginning.

I’ll be continuing to create pieces that not only tell a story, but also give back, supporting wildlife and conservation efforts wherever possible.

If you feel connected to this message, whether through a piece of art or a shared love for the natural world, thank you for being part of this journey.
